North 27th Street Rapid Implementation Initiative

The City of Milwaukee’s “rapid implementation” initiative will build quick, low-cost street improvements to increase the safety and comfort of people walking, biking, and driving.

The N. 27th St. project will use paint, colored pavement markings, and flexible posts to create curb extensions at four intersections between W. Wells St. and W. State St. The crosswalks will also be repainted, and the Near West Side Business Improvement District (NWS BID) may add decorative planters to some curb extensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will this project improve safety?

Curb extensions reduce passing on the right, slow speeds of turning motorists, and can also reduce speeding by visually narrowing the travel lanes. They also create more space for people walking and shorten the crossing distance across a street.

Will any parking be removed with this project?

No. The curb extensions will be installed at intersections, where parking is already prohibited within 15 feet of a crosswalk.

What happens if there are problems once the project is installed?

Rapid implementation projects can be easily adjusted by adding, moving, or removing flexible posts as needed. The City will evaluate the project to measure changes and identify any potential issues.

Will individual businesses need to do anything?

The City is working with the NWS BID to ensure that basic maintenance like sweeping debris is carried out on a regular basis. The City will be responsible for replacing any posts that get knocked down.

When will this project be built?

Construction is scheduled for Summer 2020.
