The Creative Corridor was identified as a catalytic project in the Near South Side Area Plan and the Walkers Point Strategic Action Plan. The Creative Corridor project envisions the development of a vibrant cultural arts and entertainment district along South 5th Street, South 6th Street, and West National Avenue in the Walker's Point Neighborhood. Recommendations include the reconstruction of South 5th Street as a "complete street", the creation of a main street district along West National Avenue, the application of creative placemaking techniques, the revitalization of historic properties, and the redevelopment of opportunity sites.
Based on the recommendations of the Walker’s Point Neighborhood Strategic Action Plan and the input received from area business owners and residents in response to the options for reconstructing South 5th Street, the City of Milwaukee will move forward with plans to reconstruct South 5th Street with significantly wider sidewalks and a conversion of the on-street parking on the street from angle parking to parallel parking. The Department of Public Works will begin developing a final design for the street to be constructed in 2016. Department of Public Works and Department of City Development staff will continue to work with area businesses during this design process to mitigate the concerns expressed during the public comment period related to parking options during construction, construction scheduling, and intersection design.
Once the initial design of the street is completed, DPW will coordinate a Public Information Meeting to present the design to area businesses and residents, discuss the specifics of the project and the timeline for construction. It is expected that this Public Information Meeting will occur during late 2015 / early 2016.
