Meet the Commissioner

Ghassan A. Korban - Commissioner of the Department of Public Works

Ghassan Korban was appointed Commissioner of Public Works by Mayor Tom Barrett and confirmed by the Milwaukee Common Council on July 6, 2011. He was re-appointed to the position and confirmed in July 2012. Commissioner Korban's main focus is to help Milwaukee to become the "greenest" city in the nation.

Commissioner Korban has been a part of the fabric of the Department of Public Works for 25 years, beginning his career as a Project Engineer in 1987. His first 20 years were spent in the Infrastructure Services Construction Section as Project Engineer, Testing Laboratory Manager Assistant, Construction Supervisor, District Manager, and Chief Construction Engineer.  One of the highlights of that era was managing a $60 million construction budget; another included being responsible for one of two Design and Construction Districts in the City of Milwaukee, managing a staff of 50 engineers, technicians, and administrative staff.

Prior to being appointed Commissioner, Korban was the Coordination Manager for the Department of Public Works.  As the Coordination Manager, he was responsible for administering all formal and informal Public Works contracts, including the $70 million City Hall restoration project, which was completed on time and within budget.  He also served as the liaison between the Department of Public Works and the Department of City Development on development projects, and as the liaison between Business Improvement Districts and Main Street Associations.  Some of his other duties included managing the Milwaukee River Skimmer operations and representing the Department on all Riverwalk related issues.

He also was the coordinator of the City of Milwaukee Streetscaping Design Standards project and the Support for Business Program, a program designed to minimize the impact of construction projects on abutting businesses.

Korban is a board member of the Milwaukee Riverwalk District and is a member of the River Revitalization Foundation.  He is on the Advisory Committee on Transportation Systems Planning and Programming for the Milwaukee Urbanized Area, and serves on the City of Milwaukee Capitol Improvements Committee and the City of Milwaukee Streetcar Review Committee. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Public Works Association.

Commissioner Korban earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters of Science degree in Construction Management from Marquette University.

Korban is the 15th Commissioner to serve the Department in the City of Milwaukee.  The first commissioner, Harry E. Briggs, was appointed in 1910.  Prior to that, the Department was run by a Board of Public Works created in 1869.
