Fall Leaf Collection Schedule

Fall Leaf Collection Schedule

City of Milwaukee residents can rake leaves into the street from October 1st through November 15th for pickup by City crews. After November 15th, leaves can be taken to one of the City's Self-Help Centers. City crews will wrap up leaf collection efforts November 30th.

Residents are asked to rake their leaves into the street at the curb for collection by Department of Public Works Sanitation Division crews. After November 15th, sanitation crews will still pick up remaining leaf piles as long as weather permits. If you still have leaves not yet raked into the road, you must bag them and take them to a Self-Help Center for disposal.

For more information, the DPW Call Center is available during business days from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm at (414) 286-CITY (2489). You can always make other special pickup requests online, at any time of day, using DPW's online service request.

Sanitation Services urges residents to do the following:

  • Do not put leaves in plastic bags
  • Put Halloween pumpkins in your green garbage cart or on a compost pile, not on leaf piles in the street
  • Please keep debris, such as flowers and vegetable plants, on top of your leaf piles at the curb
  • Do not put brush in the leaf piles
  • Keep piles away from sewer grates
  • Keep debris away from storm drains in the street.
  • Do not put plastic bags of leaves in the street. Empty them and put the empty plastic bags in the garbage. The leaves collected by the city are composted but plastic bags will not decompose.
  • Large amounts of branches should be piled away from overhanging trees. Call (414) 286-CITY (2489) for a special brush pickup or fill out an online service request.

Off-Season Leaf Removal

In the off season leaves may be taken to a Self-Help Center location. Please refer to our Self-Help Centers for locations and hours of operations.

Recycle Leaves and Grass

Shred leaves with your lawnmower on the grass or compost them. Grass clippings left on the lawn will nourish the soil, too. Brush can also be taken to one of the City's Self-Help Centers.

New Highlights

Extra Cart Fee. Beginning January 1, 2013 households with more than one garbage cart will incur a $13 per quarter charge for each additional garbage cart.

To avoid this charge, contact the DPW Call Center at 286-CITY (2489) to request the City remove the extra garbage carts from your property. There is no extra charge for more than one recycling cart.

Construction Related Material Charge.  There is a charge for all City residents bringing construction related material into the self help stations. This includes roofing material, brick, stones, concrete, lumber, drywall, paneling and other construction material.

The charge is $15 for up to 8 cubic yards, and $30 for 8-16 cubic yards.  (16 cubic yard maximum.)  No contractor vehicles allowed.

Bulky Changes

City crews will only pick up one (1) cubic yard of extra material placed out for pickup on your designated collection day. This is about the size of an easy chair.  Call 286-CITY (2489) to request pickup of larger piles for a fee. See the self help page for more information
