Garbage & Recycling Carts

Recycle Your Extra Carts

Waste Reduction works! More and more people find they no longer need two or more garbage carts because they're doing an effective job of recycling and generating less garbage. If you have an extra cart, please call (414) 286-CITY (2489) or fill out an online service request, and we'll collect it.

Broken Garbage and Recycling Carts

The Sanitation Division repairs broken carts. Call (414) 286-CITY (2489) or fill out an online service request to have your cart picked up for repair or replacement.

Keep Your Carts Free From Snow

City of Milwaukee garbage and recycling collectors and their safety committee ask for your help during snowy winter months. They have a hard time picking up garbage and recycling when carts are stuck in snow piles or frozen to the ground.

Consider that Sanitation workers, on a typical day, haul out and empty 700 garbage carts per two-person truck. That's eight to 12 tons handled by two people in one day. Now add to that trying to wrestle a heavy cart out of a snowbank. So please give the crews a break and consider their safety. Make sure your garbage and recycling carts aren't frozen or buried in snow. Be sure to clear a path through the snow to the carts.

Also, please check to see that the fire hydrant near your house is clear of snow. The Milwaukee Fire Department depends on residents to make sure fire hydrants are accessible and thanks you for your assistance.

Extra Cart Fee. Beginning January 1, 2014 households with more than one garbage cart will incur a $15 per quarter charge for each additional garbage cart.

To avoid this charge, contact the Call Center at 286-CITY (2489) to request the City remove the extra garbage carts from your property. There is no extra charge for more than one recycling cart.

Construction Related Material Charge.  There is a charge for all City residents bringing construction related material into the self help stations. This includes roofing material, brick, stones, concrete, lumber, drywall, paneling and other construction material.

The charge is $20 for up to 8 cubic yards, and $40 for 8-16 cubic yards.  (16 cubic yard maximum.)  No contractor vehicles allowed.

Bulky Changes.  City crews will only pick up one (1) cubic yard of extra material placed out for pickup on your designated collection day. This is about the size of an easy chair.  Call 286-CITY (2489) to request pickup of larger piles for a fee. See the self help page for more information
