Forestry Services

Forestry Services is responsible for the design, planning, planting, and management of street trees, boulevards, landscapes, greenspaces, and beautification projects within the City of Milwaukee.

The primary goal of Forestry Services is to efficiently manage the urban landscape to provide a better quality of life for our citizens and visitors. This effort seeks to maximize the environmental and psychological benefits of the urban forest, while enhancing both landscape and property values.

The division is responsible for the management of all shade and ornamental trees growing along city streets and boulevards which constitutes approximately 200,000 trees.

Forestry manages vegetation on 121.8 miles of boulevards, 57 totlots, 59 greenspaces, 20 designated municipal properties, and 20 Downtown above-ground planters. We also serve as a resource to other agencies in greenspace design, implementation and maintenance.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was confirmed to be in Milwaukee in 2012.  It is an invasive wood boring beetle that can kill ash trees within 2-4 years.  The Forestry Division has been fighting this deadly pest with regular innoculations of City trees. To help Milwaukee residents prepare to fight an EAB infestation of their private property ash trees, the Forestry Division has mapped more than 15,000 parcels with ash trees at risk for EAB.  City residents are encouraged to find their property and neighborhood on this map to determine if ash trees live nearby.  This site also has information on what to do to help combat EAB in your private-property trees.

Extra Cart Fee. Beginning January 1, 2014 households with more than one garbage cart will incur a $15 per quarter charge for each additional garbage cart.

To avoid this charge, contact the Call Center at 286-CITY (2489) to request the City remove the extra garbage carts from your property. There is no extra charge for more than one recycling cart.

Construction Related Material Charge.  There is a charge for all City residents bringing construction related material into the self help stations. This includes roofing material, brick, stones, concrete, lumber, drywall, paneling and other construction material.

The charge is $20 for up to 8 cubic yards, and $40 for 8-16 cubic yards.  (16 cubic yard maximum.)  No contractor vehicles allowed.

Bulky Changes.  City crews will only pick up one (1) cubic yard of extra material placed out for pickup on your designated collection day. This is about the size of an easy chair.  Call 286-CITY (2489) to request pickup of larger piles for a fee. See the self help page for more information
