Frozen Pipes and Water Meters

Winter Water Safety: Pipes and Meters

Water pipes and meters can freeze within hours if exposed to cold air. Frozen pipes can cut off your water or even burst, causing flooding and costly repairs.

Homeowners and landlords can take simple steps to prevent damage:

  • Keep indoor temperatures above 32°F.
  • Wrap pipes with insulation or heat tape.
  • Let a small trickle of water run from faucets to keep water moving.

If your pipes are damaged, call a licensed plumber.

Tips to Protect Your Pipes and Meters

1. Eliminate Cold Drafts

  • Close doors and windows tightly.
  • Install storm windows in basements.
  • Seal cracks in walls and around windows.
  • Turn off and drain outdoor garden hoses before freezing temperatures.

2. Keep Pipes Warm

  • Open doors to rooms with pipes to let warm air circulate.
  • Place a lighted bulb near pipes (never use open flames).
  • Wrap pipes with insulation or heat tape.
  • If a sink is against an outside wall, insulate the wall.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to reach pipes.

3. Keep Water Moving

  • Let a small trickle of water run from faucets during freezing weather — it’s less expensive than repairing a frozen or burst pipe.

4. Thaw Frozen Pipes Safely

  • Open a faucet near the frozen section.
  • Warm the pipe starting at the faucet and moving toward the frozen area using a hair dryer (never leave unattended).
  • Do not use a blowtorch or open flame.
  • Once water flows, let a small stream run until normal heating returns.
  • Reduce drafts and allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

5. Protect Your Water Meter

  • Keep warm air circulating around your meter (usually in the basement).
  • If the meter is in a separate room, leave the door open.
  • If it’s in a cabinet, open the cabinet door.
  • For outdoor pit meters, ensure the cover fits properly and pipes do not touch the walls.
  • No water from your faucets? Your meter may be frozen. Contact Milwaukee Water Works.
