The City of Milwaukee prints 10,000-20,000 copies of the Milwaukee by Bike map each year. We cannot afford to mail all those maps to individuals who live in Milwaukee, so we distribute them to all area bike shops, libraries, City Hall, County Parks. The maps are free and can be picked up at any of those locations. If you should find one of those locations is out of maps, please let me know via email or by calling (414) 286-3144 and I will restock that location and mail you a map for your trouble. The map can be downloaded in two large pdf files below, but the format will require a large plotter if you want to print it.
If you live outside of the County and need a map mailed to you, please contact Dave Schlabowske, City of Milwaukee Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator via email by clicking here or at david.schlabowske@milwaukee.gov. The map covers Milwaukee County and shows all on-street bike routes, striped bike lanes, and off-street trails. It also lists some streets preferred by area bicyclists, but without any special accomodation for cylists.
The pdf files linked below are about 48 mb each, and some internet connections time out before they download.

Area cyclists may find the maps below useful. They both cover larger areas than the free Milwaukee County map above. The state map covers the largest area, but has less detail in urban areas than the Little Transport Press map. Both maps are excellent and cyclists may consider getting both since they really serve different needs. They are available for purchase at bike shops and other locations:
The Milwaukee Bike Map from Bikeverywhere covers the Milwaukee region from the Illinois State Line to Port Washington and west to Oconomowoc. It directs cyclists to roads deemed by a local researcher to be the best route option in an area. These routes were selected and field-tested by one of Milwaukee's most avid bicycle explorers, then checked by other experienced bicyclists. it is a little less complicated to use than the state map for that reason. You will find unique local roads and little-known bike trails for great recreational riding plus direct, bike-friendly routes to get you to work and back or through your daily errands. All of it is laid out in an easy-to-read network of roads and trails that will take you where you want to go. This map is available online from the www.bikeeverywhere.com or from local bike dealers.
The Wisconsin Bicycle Map divides the state into four sections and rates the roads based on conditions like posted speed limits and the number of cars per day. It also shows off-street trails and rural roads with paved shoulders. The Southeast section covers an area from Madison to Milwaukee and from the Illinois border to Door County. This map offers the lots of information for cyclists to make their own choices based on road type. And although it is improved over previous versions, because of its scale, it cannot offer as detailed information about roads in the urban areas. It is available at most area bike shops listed on our bike shops page or directly from the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin's onine store. You can also download pdfs of individual counties here.
If you would like a tour of Milwaukee's bike facilities or if you live out of town and would like a map mailed to you, please contact Dave Schlabowske, City of Milwaukee Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator at 414-286-3144 or via email .
