Steamfitter (MPS)

STEAMFITTER
BOILERS/BURNERS and CONTROLS
Milwaukee Public Schools

THE PURPOSE:

The Steamfitter designs, installs, repairs, and maintains a variety of HVAC systems and equipment throughout the buildings under the authority of the Milwaukee Public Schools.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Specialty – Boilers/Burners:
    • Install and maintain industrial and commercial gas, oil, and boiler/burner equipment.
    • Install and maintain all components of heating systems at existing and new installations.
    • Design and draw schematics for steam and hot water heating systems.
    • Calculate radiation requirements, heating loads, and sizes of piping, gas mains and equipment.
  • Specialty – Controls:
    • Install and maintain various types of control systems, such as Siemens, Johnson, and Andover energy management systems.
    • Install and maintain all components of heating systems at existing and new installations.
    • Design and draw schematics for steam and hot water heating systems.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The person in this position must be willing and able to do the following:

  1. Work under conditions of high temperature, dust, cramped spaces, and high noise levels; and,
  2. Furnish basic steamfitter hand tools of the trade.
  • NOTE: Persons hired as Steamfitters are expected to be able to perform the functions typically associated with this trade at the journey level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Valid driver's license and availability of a properly insured personal automobile for use on the job at time of appointment and throughout employment (car allowance provided).
  2. Residency in the City of Milwaukee within six months of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Certification in the EPA Asbestos Abatement Training Program within six months of appointment.
  4. Confined space training within six months of appointment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Specialty – Boilers/Burners:
    • Significant knowledge of the craft of steamfitting and HVAC servicing, with skill sufficient to perform the tasks typically associated with the craft at journey level.
    • Skill in installing and maintaining industrial and commercial gas and oil burner equipment.
    • Thorough familiarity with the following: design of steam and hot water heating systems, various kinds of burners, and various kinds of regulating control systems.
    • Ability to read, design, and prepare steamfitting drawings and control schematics related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
    • Skill in checking, testing, repairing, and installing various types of pneumatic, electric, and solid state regulating control systems and components.
    • Skill in repairing piping, radiation, and air handling units.
    • Knowledge of vacuum, condensate, and hot water pumps, hot water and steam valves, and steam traps.
    • Skill in installing, repairing, and maintaining all pumps, valves, and traps.
    • Skill in welding pipe, brazing cast iron, soldering, and silver soldering copper tubing and coils.
    • Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs. or more of equipment or material on a daily basis.
  • Specialty – Controls:
    • Significant knowledge of the craft of steamfitting and HVAC servicing, with skill sufficient to perform the tasks typically associated with the craft at journey level.
    • Skill in the use of computers and computerized energy management systems.
    • Thorough familiarity with the following: design of steam and hot water heating systems, various kinds of burners, and various kinds of regulating control systems.
    • Ability to read, design, and prepare steamfitting drawings and control schematics related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
    • Skill in checking, testing, repairing, and installing various types of pneumatic, electric, and solid state regulating control systems and components.
    • Skill in repairing piping, radiation, and air handling units.
    • Knowledge of vacuum, condensate, and hot water pumps, hot water and steam valves, and steam traps.
    • Skill in installing, repairing, and maintaining all pumps, valves, and traps.
    • Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs. or more of equipment or material on a daily basis. 

 


THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: training and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

The examination will be held as soon as practical after November 20, 2009 (extended until November 30, 2009).
