Civil Engineer I

CIVIL ENGINEER I

Civil Engineer I is the entry-level position of the Civil Engineer promotional series. Promotion to the next level, Civil Engineer II, is possible after six (6) months of experience as a Civil Engineer I and one (1) year of professional engineering experience.

THE PURPOSE:

  • The Civil Engineer I will be responsible for performing a variety of professional engineering duties including designing, planning, and/or construction in one or more of the following areas: sewer and environmental engineering, water engineering, street, highway and transportation engineering, traffic engineering, and structural engineering.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares engineering designs and plans.
  • Conducts engineering studies and investigations.
  • Reviews plans, correspondence and legislative initiatives and prepares responses.
  • Prepares reports and makes recommendations.
  • Prepares cost estimates.
  • Makes inspections of infrastructure facilities.
  • Prepares contract documents.
  • Coordinates design and construction activities.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a school of engineering whose program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Copies of transcripts MUST be submitted with application or sent immediately to the attention of Mr. Tim Keeley at the address below.
    • Note: Students in their final year of school may apply for this position but may not be hired until their degree has been completed.
  2. Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Residence in the City of Milwaukee within six (6) months of appointment and throughout employment.

THE SALARY RANGE (624) IS: $47,199 - $56,333 annually with excellent benefits. (The annual salary range for Civil Engineer II (626) is $53,646 - $63,981). These are 2006 rates; 2008 rates have yet to be determined.

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: training and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job. Separate eligible lists will be produced based on the particular Civil Engineering discipline undertaken by the candidate.

This is a continuous recruitment. Applications will be accepted and examinations held during 2008 as often as required to meet the needs of the City. Employment may be possible immediately following the examination is positions are vacant at that time. The names of successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list in a rank determined by the final grade without reference to the date of the examination. Candidates may take an examination for this position only once every six months.
