Getting Tougher on
The City of Milwaukee is committed to the prevention and enforcement of illegal drug activity. But I discovered that people found in a drug house could not be criminally charged by police unless they were actually in possession of illegal drugs.
Now because of a change I introduced that was approved by the Common Council this summer, just being in an illegal drug house can lead to a fine of $500 to $5,000. Many people had little reason to fear being punished if they were just found to be in an illegal drug house before, but now just frequenting an illegal drug house can lead to a fine or up to 90 days in jail.
My ordinance makes it unlawful for any person to knowingly be an inhabitant of, frequent or patronize any illegal drug house. Drug use and drug related crime continue to constitute a serious problem and I believe this new law gives police officers another tool to deal with the proliferation of drugs.
