Amid Bump and Run Carjackings, MPD Issues Safety Tips

Milwaukee Police report the rising prevalence of a new crime trend on the near South Side—“Bump and Run” carjackings, where criminals intentionally cause a minor car crash in order to initiate contact with a potential carjacking victim.

If you are involved in a fender bender and fear that you are about to be victimized, MPD offers these safety tips:

If an accident occurs:

1. Pull over to the curb, allowing enough room to leave if you feel threatened

2. No need to rush and check out the damage

3. Check the surroundings including mirrors

4. Warning signs:

a. Passenger rather than driver approaches

b. Multiple people approach

c. Aggressive movement of person approaching

5. If you are uncertain:

a. Lock doors and speak through a partly open window

b. Ask other person to go to a public spot that has cameras

6. If you feel threatened:

a. Dial 911

i. Tell 911 that you have been in an accident with the location

ii. If you believe that they were going to harm or rob you, inform 911

b. Attempt to obtain a license plate and vehicle description

c. Attempt to get descriptions of the occupants of the striking vehicle

d. Drive to a safe location

i. Police Station

ii. Firehouse

iii. Public place with cameras or a lot of people

 

The law requires that accidents be reported as soon as possible and to render aid if needed; however, if under circumstances which would lead you to believe that your life or property is endangered, you must contact the police and report this immediately. Law Enforcement is likely to direct you to a safe place.

c. lntento de obtener descripciones de los ocupantes del vehfculo impactante

d. Conduce a un Iugar seguro ·

i. Estacion De Policia

ii. Estacion De Bomberos

iii. Lugar publico con camaras o una gran cantidad de personas

 

La ley requiere que los accidentes se informara tan pronto como sea posible y prestar ayuda en caso necesario; sin embargo, si en circunstancias que llevarfan a creer que su vida o Ia propiedad esta en peligro, debe ponerse en contacto con Ia policfa y reportar esto inmediatamente.
