Infant Mortality Summit 2010: Safe Sleep

May 3rd, 2010

Wheaton
Franciscan
- St. Joseph

Klieger Auditorium

7:30 am - Noon

The goal of the Summit was to present national, state and local data on the relationship between unsafe sleep and infant death, and to build consensus around the need for a consistent message on safe sleep from the community.  Leaders of our city’s major healthcare institutions, legislators, business leaders, local community and faith-based leaders, social workers and health care providers all came to address this critical public health emergency.  Breakout sessions and a final forum for recommendations and next steps helped everyone attending to focus on what their individual contributions could be toward lowering infant death rates due to unsafe sleep conditions.

The Summit featured a keynote speech by the nationally renowned Fern R. Hauck, M.D., M.S., Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Hauck’s research has focused on risk and protective factors for SIDS, with particular attention to the disparity in incidence between African American and white infants.
