The Milwaukee Fire Department Receives the Remembering When Conference Award MFD is one of 40 fire departments to attend the second Remembering When Conference in Boston, MA
Milwaukee – (September 19, 2008) – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has awarded the Remembering When Conference Award to the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD). The MFD is one of 40 fire departments to receive the award and expected to attend the second Remembering When Conference; which will emphasize reaching older adults through home visits. As a requirement to apply for the award the MFD has collaborated with Interfaith Older Adult Programs, Inc. Collectively, the two will implement every aspect of the Remembering When program in the Milwaukee community after returning from the Remembering When Conference in Boston, MA, December 3-5. After the conference, both organizations will visit older adults’ homes and teach them how to prevent fires and falls by distributing brochures and sharing what they learned. “The Remembering When Program perfectly aligns with the MFD goal to promote and further fire education within the Milwaukee community,” said MFD Fire Chief Douglas A. Holton. “Our department is honored to participate in this phenomenal program geared toward helping older adults avoid fires and falls.” Remembering When is a fire and fall prevention program for older adults developed by NFPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The program was created in 1999 to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible. Since then, communities throughout North America have been implementing the Remembering When program, reaching thousands of older adults. The program is centered around 16 key safety messages—eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention—developed by experts from national and local safety organizations, as well as through focus group testing in high-fire-risk states. “Interfaith has a strong commitment to collaborate with other organizations and entities in our community,” said Lisa Kallmann, assistant executive director for Interfaith Older Adult Programs, Inc. “We look forward to working with the Milwaukee Fire Department to carry out the Remembering When program.” Milwaukee Fire Department The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) is the primary fire suppression, prevention, rescue and emergency medical service for the City of Milwaukee. The department’s motto is "Courage, Integrity and Honor." MFD consists of approximately 1000 firefighters, many of which serve simultaneously as paramedics providing emergency medical services. MFD is known as one of the best fire departments nationwide for its response times and other quality services.
