Nominations Sought for Mayor’s Design Awards;
Great Milwaukee Buildings, Improvements, and Spaces Will Be Honored
Remarkable buildings, individuals, spaces, or physical improvements in Milwaukee will be honored again this year by Mayor Tom Barrett’s annual Mayor’s Design Awards. Now is the time to submit nominations. In its fourteenth year, the awards honor aspects of Milwaukee’s built environment that make our city a lively and engaging place.
“Milwaukee is growing and changing in notable ways, and the best of those changes will be recognized,” Mayor Barrett said. “Past award winners have made this city an even better place to live and work, and I know there are quite a few people and places deserving of that same honor.”
In the coming weeks, nominations will be vetted – evaluated on the basis of the positive change they have brought to Milwaukee. Sometimes awards go to grand, landmark structures; awards also go to smaller projects such as landscaping in a residential neighborhood. Historic preservation is also recognized by the Mayor’s Design Awards.
To inspire nominations, the Mayor invited nominators to consider a range of categories including “Design that grabs you,” “Go green,” “Historic splendor,” “It’s all in the details,” “Live. Work. Play. Any or all,” “Spaces and places,” “Urban oddities and amenities,” “Urbanism redefined,” and “Urban heroes.”
People can explore the categories and submit nominations for the Mayor’s Design Awards online. To receive consideration, nominations should be submitted before Friday, March 18, 2011.
