The Milwaukee Fire Department Kicks Off Annual Pink T-Shirt Fundraiser for Susan G. Komen
The department is selling pink t-shirts with traditional MFD logo on front and “Fire & Rescue” on back in October only
Milwaukee—(October 1, 2009)—Today, the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) kicked off the annual pink t-shirt fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Milwaukee affiliate. The department joins the fight against breast cancer for the second consecutive year, and is selling pink t-shirts with the traditional MFD logo on the front, and “Fire & Rescue” on the back. The t-shirts will be sold only in the month of October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. All net proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Milwaukee affiliate, and last year the department raised $27, 256. All MFD members and the public can purchase the t-shirts now to help the local Komen affiliate fund breast health education, breast cancer screenings, and treatment programs. On-duty MFD members can wear the pink t-shirts, in place of their approved t-shirts, every day during the month of October.
“The Milwaukee Fire Department is excited to once again engage in a fun and worthy fundraiser during Breast Cancer Awareness month,” said Chief Douglas A. Holton. “Each year thousands of people are diagnosed with breast cancer, and this is our way of showing we are here to help them win the fight against a potentially deadly diagnosis.”
The pink t-shirts come in sizes S-XXL and cash or checks are accepted. The t-shirts are $10 and available at:
· Engine 2, 755 N. 7th Street
· Engine 30, 2903 N. Teutonia Avenue
· Engine 28, 424 N. 30th Street
· Engine 12, 1400 S. 9th Street
· Engine 8, 5585 N. 69th Street
· Local 215 Union Office, 5625 W. Wisconsin Avenue
“We are honored that the MFD is continuing their efforts to fundraise for our affiliate again this year,” said Sally Sheperdson, executive director for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Milwaukee affiliate. “Last year the public was receptive to the idea of purchasing pink t-shirts, and we hope this year they are just as receptive and passionate about joining our fight against breast cancer.”
About the Susan G. Komen Milwaukee Affiliate
The Komen Milwaukee Affiliate began in 1999 to carry out the promise of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in Southeastern Wisconsin. Initially, a group of dedicated women had a desire to bring the Komen Milwaukee Race for the Cure® to the community. These breast cancer survivors, breast health professionals, and other women of vision spent countless hours making the Race a reality in Milwaukee.
Simultaneously, they and others were developing the structure for an incorporated Milwaukee Komen Affiliate, which would oversee the Race and other events as well as the rigorous grant review process through which education, screening and treatment programs in Southeastern Wisconsin would be funded.
