Westlawn Catalytic Project Update!
The current $82 million redevelopment project (underway) includes 250 housing units, new infrastructure, and expanded green space between 60th and 64th Streets, Silver Spring Drive to Lincoln Creek. Phase I will include up to 345 mixed-income units. Tax credit housing units will be completed by December, 2012. The project will include market rate homes along 60th Street and Lincoln Creek. Mixed-use/retail space is planned for Silver Spring Drive to serve Westlawn and to bring needed services to the surrounding area.
The new Westlawn is a green development. A new linear park with informal sports fields, a picnic shelter, and community gardens managed by Growing Power will reconnect the neighborhood to Lincoln Creek on Westlawn's south end. Milwaukee's Housing Authority is rebuilding Westlawn to meet or exceed new environmental standards, including LEED Neighborhood Development certification. Use of sustainable design strategies will create reduce impacts on the environment and improve storm water management.
