The Milwaukee Fire Department Donates Fire Engine to Sister City Morogoro, Tanzania

The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) donated a 1992, Ford Darley Fire Engine to Morogoro, Tanzania, in an acceptance ceremony that took place at the Fire and Police Academy on June 29. The fire engine, which was in service with the MFD until last year, will be the second fire apparatus in the Morogoro Fire Department’s fleet, and was accepted by Tanzanian Ambassador to the U.S., Ombeni Sefue. In August 2007, Morogoro became a sister city to Milwaukee, a relationship that was initially built through an organization called the Hope in Tanzania Foundation. Since then Mayor Tom Barrett, 2nd District Alderman Joe Davis, and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Marketing, Tanzanian Embassy, Audifax Choma, has helped foster the Milwaukee and Morogoro sister city relationship. During the sister city ceremony in 2007, Fire Chief Douglas Holton made a goodwill gesture to donate a fire engine to Morogoro, which has a population of 300,000 people, and averages 50 fire fatalities per year. Dan Meehan, a local businessman who is the founder of the Meehan Foundation, has covered the cost for the fire engine to be shipped from the Port of New York to Tanzania. Click here to read more.

The Milwaukee Fire Department Joins the Nationwide Movement "Red Shirt Fridays"

The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) joins the nationwide movement “Red Shirt Fridays” in an effort to show solidarity in support of our U.S. soldiers. Every Friday members of the MFD have the option to wear a traditional MFD t-shirt, with the department’s logo on the front and “Fire & Rescue” on the back, in red.

The shirts will be worn every Friday indefinitely and until all the U.S. troops return home. The shirts are also being sold to the public for $10 each at select engine houses. All net proceeds will go to the Home for Our Troops nonprofit organization and will be used to build a handicapped-accessible home for local veteran Jason M. Schulz. In 2007, Schulz lost both of his legs in Iraq upon return from a vehicle recovery mission. Later this year he will be discharged from the Army and will need a specially adapted home that will accommodate his needs and enable him to concentrate on his recovery.

The red t-shirts come in sizes S-XXL and cash or checks are accepted. The t-shirts are available at:
·         Engine 2, 755 N. 7th Street
·         Engine 30, 2903 N. Teutonia Avenue
·         Engine 28, 424 N. 30th Street

MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM MFD FIRE CHIEF DOUGLAS A. HOLTON
Grill Out Safely

The time has come to dust off and thoroughly clean the grills before pulling them out for the season. Backyard barbeques and outdoor grilling are sure ways to take advantage of the upcoming warm temperatures. However, it is important to remember to grill safely.

Studies show that June and July are peak months for grill fires. Nationally, fire departments respond to an average of 7900 home fires involving grills each year. These 7900 fires cause an annual average of 10 civilian deaths, 120 reported injuries, and $180 million in direct property damage according to the National Fire Protection Association. To avoid being apart of those statistics this year, and in years to come, please follow these safety tips when grilling:

  • Make sure your grill is not placed too close to your home and away from anything that can burn such as deck railings and overhanging branches
  • Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill
  • Always clean your grill thoroughly, including the trays below the grill, by removing grease or fat residue
  • Never leave a grill unattended when in use
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of reach of children and away from any igniting heat source.
  • If you are using a grill that requires coals, let them completely cool before disposal in a metal container
  • If you use starter fluid for your grill, use only charcoal starter fluid
  • Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquid to the fire
  • When using a propane grill, check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year
  • If you smell gas while cooking with a propane grill, immediately call the fire department and get far away from the grill

Sincerely,

Douglas A. Holton

Milwaukee Fire Department and Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin Team Up for Respite Event

A Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) Paramedic Lieutenant, Joshua Parish, helps a child escape the Mobile Survive Alive House as it fills with theatre smoke as part of a fire simulation. Approximately 75 children went through the fire simulation and other activities outlined for them this past Saturday, May 2, at a Volunteer Respite Event that took place at the Milwaukee Fire and Police Academy. Milwaukee firefighters and police officers were on hand to educate special-needs children on public safety. Each year the MFD and the Milwaukee Police Department team up with Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin (CSSW) to facilitate the event. This year’s event happened on Join Hands Day, a nationally-recognized volunteer day. All the children present at the respite event ranged in ages from infant to 18 years old, and suffered from conditions such as sight and hearing impairment, cognitive and developmental delays, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and autism.
