Benefits of Recycling
Recycling benefits our society, our environment, and our economy. Sometimes this is referred to as the triple bottom line, or people, planet, and profit.
Recyclable materials creates jobs. In Wisconsin, the 1.6 million tons of material diverted from landfills annually supports 97,000 jobs. Nationally, this number rises to 1.1 million jobs.
Recycling saves natural resources and landfill space.
Every ton of paper recycled saves:
- 17 trees
- 7,000 gallons of water
- 380 gallons of oil
- Enough energy to heat your home for 6 months
- 3 cubic feet of landfill space
In 2016 City residents recycled over 15,324 tons of paper!
Recycling saves the City of Milwaukee money because instead of paying to dispose of materials in a landfill, the City earns revenue from the sale of recyclables to industries that rely on them to manufacture new products. Each year recycling puts about $1.5 million dollars into the City's general fund to pay for City services that benefit you and your neighborhood.
