Cost and Availability

For children (18 years of age or younger)

Due to recent changes in federal funding, after October 1, 2012 MHD will no longer be able to provide vaccine to individuals who are not eligible to receive federally funded vaccines.  To be elligible to receive vaccine from MHD, children (18 years of age or younger) will need to meet one of the following criteria:

  • Child is uninsured (no medical insurance)

  • Child is enrolled in or eligible for Medicaid/Badgercare

  • Child is native American or Alaskan native

In addition, children with private insurance may be eligible to receive shots from MHD in the following conditions:

  • Vaccine given is a flu shot (2012-13 flu season only)

  • Insurance does not cover vaccines

  • Insurance covers vaccines, but the patient has exceeded coverage limits for vaccines

  • Insurance does not cover certain vaccines - in this case only the vaccines not covered by insurance can be given by MHD

Vaccine provided through federal funding is free for those that are elligible.  Children not eligible to receive federally funded vaccine from MHD must see their health care provider to receive vaccinations.  Immunization services generally do not have associated co-pay or deductible fees applied to the receipt of immunization services.  Clients with insurance should contact their insurance carriers to assess their co-payment and/or deductible fees.

Routine childhood/adolescent vaccinations provided though MHD include:

  • DTap
  • Hep A
  • Hep B
  • Hib
  • HPV
  • Influenza
  • MCV4
  • MMR
  • PCV
  • Polio
  • RV
  • Td
  • Tdap
  • Varicella

For adults (anyone 19 or older)

MHD offers Influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations at MHD walk-in clinics, while supplies last.  Call (414) 286-8034 to check for vaccine availability.  An upfront fee is charged to adults for influenza shots ($30) and pneumoccocal shots ($75).

Certain federally funded vaccines provided to local health departments by the Wisconsin Immunization Program can be offered to eligible adults at public health immunization clinics.  State-supplied vaccines are for uninsured and underinsured patients only.  Adults with health insurance will be directed to their primary health care provider.

The following vaccines are available:

  • Hep A/B (if certain risk factors are met)
  • MMR
  • Td
  • Tdap
  • Varicella

The Milwaukee Health Department does not provide travel vaccinations. For more information on travel vaccinations and where they may be obtained, please click here.
