2008 Main Street Milwaukee Volunteer Awards

Each year Main Street Milwaukee volunteers are invited to the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party with Mayor Tom Barrett. The evening features food from local vendors, music and an awards program. This year the Volunteer Award winners received special prize packages offered by the following sponsors: The Ambassador Hotel, Lakeside School of Massage Therapy, and Marquette University.

Main Streeter Award
The Main Streeter Award recognizes exemplary leadership in neighborhood development by an individual. The navigator is a dedicated individual who initiates changes, has overcome obstacles, has attained accomplishments in the field, and truly demonstrates visionary leadership.


Winner: John Connelly, North Avenue Gateway


“…John is a perfect example of the dedication to a task or a concept greater than one single person…People like John make our unit and our city a much more pleasant place to be.”

“Whenever we have problem properties, landlords, or subjects, John is always there to do the research or to set up meetings. He is a wealth of information when it comes to ordinances, building codes, and anything else we may or may not need to solve problems within the district. Above all, he is a tireless worker with a good attitude, which is hard to find....”

Red Eye Award
The Red Eye Award recognizes a volunteer committee member that clearly burns the candle at both ends with a record number of hours spent on Main Street Milwaukee works.


Winner: Michael DeHays, Silver City

 

 

“Mike DeHays is an exemplary volunteer who is always there when the Silver City District needs him…[He] has worked easily more than 100 hours over the years to ensure that Silver City promotional events are a success. He always has a smile on his face and is ready to serve."

Urban Pioneer Award
The Urban Pioneer Award recognizes real estate developments or district projects that promote the character of a Main Street district, offer unique appeal and can be considered a model project for other neighborhoods.


 Winner: Tres Hermanos, Lincoln Village

 
“…the key elements [of the newly laid out Tres Hermanos include] an outdoor dining terrace…increased on and off street parking spaces, significant landscaping improvements, and a space for a public art sculpture.”

Helping Hand Award
The Helping Hand Award recognizes an organization or company that has shown outstanding commitment and support in transforming a Main Street district.
