Mayor Barrett’s annual Safe Summer Brewers Game has been in existence since 2005. The goal of this Safe Summer Initiative with youth is to encourage a summer without violence in our neighborhoods.
2,000 children are invited annually and attend many different summer programs at non-profit, faith-based and youth organizations that address and promote non-violence in our community. This community and city-wide collaboration includes partnerships with the Mayor’s Office, the Milwaukee Police Department, the Office of Violence Prevention, Milwaukee Public Schools, the business community and the Brewers Community Foundation.
At the end of the summer, children are rewarded for exhibiting effort in school and good behavior by attending an outing at Miller Park. For many of them, it is their first major sporting league experience. With the support of corporate sponsors, children receive a Milwaukee Brewers game ticket, a Klement’s Hot Dog and a Pepsi-Cola refreshment.
Through these important partnerships, Mayor Barrett is making it possible for youth in our community to truly have a safe summer and enjoy a memorable day.
