Milwaukee, WI (September 5, 2017)

Today, the Trump administration announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). Having helped nearly 800,000 young immigrants across the nation, DACA has ensured they become contributing members of their families and communities without the fear of deportation. These young immigrants stabilize local communities through obtaining  driver’s licenses, social security numbers, healthcare, legal employment, and enrollment in school.

The City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission (ERC) stands with the young people who were brought to the United States and the City of Milwaukee as children. They are our future and deserve to live here without fear of deportation. America is a nation of immigrants and Milwaukee is a city of dreamers who make our country, and city, stronger.

The ERC condemns the Trump administration's action and urges Congress to act expeditiously to protect and defend DACA -- because no one should be punished for simply living, working, studying, or following their dreams in the United States of America.

We also urge the City of Milwaukee Common Council to readily begin conversations on how we can expand on protections for these Dreamers locally.

The ERC is ready to lead this charge with its legislative and community partners.
