FOR THE RECORD:  MPD Shares Facts on Bradley Tech Incident

Milwaukee Police Department
Office of Media and Communications

December 7, 2010 – Two Milwaukee Police School Resource Officers assigned to Bradley Tech were called to a fight at the school on Tuesday, November 30 at 2:15 p.m.

Officers called for backup due to the large number of students that had gathered, along with non-students, who all were called by students inside the school with cell phones.

According to Milwaukee Police Department dispatch records, 28 police officers and sergeants responded to the school between 2:15 p.m. and 2:31 p.m. Within one hour of the initial call for police, 12 of the original responding squads were released, 18 arrestees were in custody and order was restored at the school.

Additional squad cars were called to the school at 3:50 p.m. to assist with monitoring activity when school was dismissed.

There were no injuries during the incident. A facsimile gun and a sawed-off rifle were recovered from non-students outside the school.

Of the 18 arrested, 17 are juveniles ranging in age from 14 to 17, and one 18-year-old, for charges including disorderly conduct, resisting an officer and carrying a concealed weapon; 3 of the 18 were non-students. Two additional students, both aged 18, are being sought on warrants for state disorderly conduct charges.

In the days following the incident, four 2-person Milwaukee Police squads (paid for with grant money from MPS) have been monitoring the school at dismissal with no further incident.

Chief Flynn has met with Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Thornton and the department is engaged in continual dialog with MPD to ensure the safety of students and faculty at Bradley Tech.

It has been suggested that the news media and public were somehow prevented from learning of this incident due to the fact that the new police radio system is encrypted, so that it cannot be monitored by non-police personnel. All dispatched calls for police service are posted, with a 30-minute delay, on the Milwaukee Police Department Website under the Dispatched Calls for Police Service Tab.
