Call for nominations: Mayor’s Design Awards
Awards celebrate dynamic buildings & exceptional spaces
Mayor Tom Barrett today invited the public to submit nominations for the 12th annual Mayor’s Design Awards. The awards recognize exceptional buildings, spaces or other physical improvements that make Milwaukee a lively, engaging city. Historic preservation is also recognized as part of the award categories, previously called the ‘Cream of the Cream’ City Award.
Milwaukee’s renaissance is represented by the 196 projects recognized with a Mayor’s Design Award over the past decade. Projects have included new construction, renovations, landscaping and even signage. Mayor Tom Barrett added new categories to represent the city’s emphasis on green design and conversion of underused properties into attractive additions to our City landscape.
“The Design Awards present a perfect opportunity to recognize the positive change and innovation that we’re seeing in neighborhoods across the city,” said Mayor Barrett. “With each nomination, we’re celebrating another reinvestment in Milwaukee that attracts businesses, visitors and residents.”
Any exciting change (or change agent) within the City of Milwaukee can be nominated. The following categories are intended to inspire nominations:
- Design That Grabs You
- Go Green
- Historic Splendor
- It’s All In The Details
- Live Work Harmony
- Spaces and Places
- Urbanism Redefined
- Urban Oddities/Amenities
- Urban Heroes
The public is invited to explore the categories and submit their picks online by visiting www.city.milwaukee.gov/MayorsDesignAwards.htm. The deadline for nominations is March 2, 2009. Winners will be announced at an event in May and posted on the city’s webpage.
Previous winners have included Alterra Coffee Headquarters (2999 N. Humboldt), Milwaukee Intermodal Station (433 W. St. Paul), Shea Community Garden (Shea & National Ave) and Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community (2802 W. Wright).
